Case Study
Team Cohesion Training for Battalion Chiefs & Captains
Charleston Fire Department
Description + Goal
The Charleston Fire Department is committed to creating a safer Charleston. To accomplish this goal, they wanted to increase cohesion among battalion chiefs and equip all with tools and best practices for achieving success in a high-stress environment and occupation.
Solution + Services
Our first step was to review existing workplace dynamics and cohesion with the battalion chiefs and outline an action plan for altering and improving their working relationship.
From there, we utilized Everything DiSC® and The Five Behaviors® model to guide the command staff and battalion chiefs in establishing best practices and a framework for crucial conversations. We focused our training on improving teamwork effectiveness and collaboration by focusing on the critical behaviors for a successful team: trust, conflict, commitment, accountability, and results.
Our work with the CFD continues and has expanded to include professional leadership coaching.
Outcomes
The CFD is benefitting from increased employee morale, accountability, and trust. Team members are more engaged, and retention is on the rise.
The Charleston Fire Department has used Liz's services to assist with team building in the Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and Fire Chief ranks of the department. Initially, trust and accountability were low due to personnel conflict. After working with Liz in several sessions over the course of a year, both trust and accountability improved dramatically, which led the department to further engage by bringing our Battalion Chief into the training sessions. Overall, I have been very pleased at the results achieved with the guidance and expertise Liz brings. She has an easygoing demeanor that puts people at ease but also has the ability to get to the heart of any issue being discussed.
